Family Photo Shoot FAQ

Day of the Shoot

How much time do I need to set aside for my shoot?

Heather will aim to arrive approximately 30 to 45 minutes prior to the beginning of your shoot to size up the space and set up her equipment.  Please allow at least 30 minutes for her to break down and pack up her equipment afterwards.

Why do you need an hour to shoot my family portraits?

Heather does more than just photograph the group during that hour.  Depending on the number of family members and the group dynamic, Heather will rearrange family members for different shots and even shoot children, parents, and other family members separately or in different combinations.  You will receive a wide range of photos from your shoot.

What should we wear?

There are few things to consider when selecting the attire for your shoot.  First, the location and weather conditions, if your shoot will be outside.  If you will be photographed in a pumpkin patch in the fall or in a Christmas tree farm in 40-degree weather, for example, it is appropriate to wear a jacket or fleece not only to keep warm but to also convey the feeling of the setting.  Likewise, it is appropriate to wear a sweater or turtleneck if being photographed in front of your lit fireplace or a short-sleeved shirt in the park on a summer day.

Whether you are dressed for cold or mild weather, it is best to wear solid colors and classic, timeless styles, as these photographs will be viewed for decades to come.  For attractive-looking photos, try to stay away from bold colors and bright patterns.  It is also a good idea to coordinate the color palette among all family members who will be photographed to maintain a cohesive look.

Reserving or Changing your Session

How do I reserve a date and what are the payment terms for a portrait session?

Once you have decided upon a date and Heather confirms her availability, you can reserve your date with a $50 deposit.  The balance of the price for your selected package is due upon completion of the session.

What if I scheduled an outdoor shoot and there is inclement weather?

You have two options in the event of bad weather:

  • Move the location indoors
  • Reschedule your shoot

If Heather is concerned about the weather, she will call you the day of the shoot to discuss your options.  A separate deposit will not be required for a shoot that is rescheduled due to poor weather conditions.

What if I need to cancel my shoot?

Heather would appreciate if you could provide as much advance notice as possible.  In the event of a cancellation, your deposit will be returned according to the following schedule:

  • more than 72 hours prior to your scheduled shoot: 100%
  • 48 to 72 hours prior to your scheduled shoot: 50%
  • less than 48 hours prior to your scheduled shoot: 0%

The Photos

When will my photos be available?

Based on a one-hour shoot with no retouching, you can expect a notification within five business days after the shoot stating that your proofs are available for viewing.

Why does it take so long for my proofs to be available?

Two factors contribute to the amount of time it will take for your proofs to be available: the number of shoots Heather has scheduled during the same week as yours and the number of your shots that Heather selects to edit and upload to your proofing portal.

Can we have digital copies of the photos?

The digital files are stored indefinitely and may be purchased at any time.  They are offered at no charge after a print purchase of $2,000.

Can we get Web-ready image files for social networking sites?

Yes, you may purchase low-resolution images for $20 each.
